Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
Automation could take over more of this role. Phone systems now route calls automatically, scheduling software handles bookings, and AI chatbots answer basic queries. Employers are cutting reception positions or combining them with other admin work. Pay growth is often limited, with little progression. You'll also face constant interruptions, repetitive tasks, and dealing with frustrated or rude visitors daily.
Where the jobs are
Medical and dental practices spread regionally but still favour towns with populations over 50,000. Remote reception work exists but is less common. The practical reality is that office-based reception shrinks as you leave major cities.
