Day-to-day
Design network topology and architecture including LAN, WAN, and cloud connectivity models to meet organisational requirements. Conduct network requirements analysis by interviewing stakeholders and documenting bandwidth, redundancy, and latency needs. Evaluate and recommend network infrastructure components including routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers from vendors such as Cisco, Arista, or Juniper. Plan network security architecture including segmentation, access control lists (ACLs), and demilitarised zones (DMZs) aligned with ISM controls. Design disaster recovery and business continuity strategies for critical network services and data replication. Create detailed network design documentation including data flow diagrams, IP address schemes, and configuration standards. Assess and recommend cloud network services from AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud for hybrid connectivity and workload placement. Evaluate vendor proposals and conduct proof-of-concept testing for new network technologies and solutions.

What this role asks for
Bachelor degree or higher (ABS skill level 1)
Can employers fill these jobs
Employers hiring for this occupation were generally able to find suitable applicants in 2025. This measures how hard employers found it to fill jobs. It is not a count of jobs, and it does not say whether the occupation is growing.
Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You'll need deep technical certifications (Cisco CCNP or equivalent) that can take 12 to 18 months to complete while working, plus real network design experience. Most employers won't hire you into this role without 5+ years as a network engineer first. The pay ceiling is solid, but you're locked into on-call support for critical infrastructure failures at 2am, and one major network outage becomes your reputation nightmare.
Where the jobs are
Remote work is rare because you need to be present for vendor meetings and infrastructure audits. Most roles are in large organisations, banks, telcos, and government departments rather than regional areas.
Pay
Published for ANZSCO unit group 2631, the wider group this job sits in, not for this job on its own.
This is the median for full-time employees who are not managers and are paid at the adult rate, before tax and salary sacrifice. It is a guide to what the work pays, not a wage rate.
