Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Getting a permanent job is genuinely tough. Most positions are fixed-term research contracts (2 to 3 years), so you'll spend significant time chasing grants and applying for the next role. You'll also do a lot of unglamorous work: trudging through mud and insects in remote areas, handling animal waste, and sitting alone analysing data for months.

Where the jobs are

Government agencies (such as state environment and primary industries departments) and museums hire too. Regional jobs exist in conservation NGOs and national parks, but they're fewer and often seasonal or part-time. Remote work is rare in this field because fieldwork and lab work require you to be on-site.
