Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You'll need a Certificate III or IV in aircraft maintenance, which takes time and money upfront. The real grind is the certification burden: CASA rules mean you're constantly learning new directives and manufacturer specs, and mistakes can ground aircraft or worse. Pay plateaus quickly once you're qualified, so don't expect big jumps after year five. Shift work and on-call rosters are common at major airlines.
Where the jobs are
Some work exists at regional airports and with specialist maintenance contractors, but most positions are in or near metro areas. Remote work isn't realistic for hands-on hangar work. The airline industry itself is heavily centralised.
