Day-to-day

Secure and restrain cargo using chains, straps, and load-securing equipment in compliance with Australian Load Restraint Guide standards. Maintain accurate logbooks or electronic work diaries to record driving hours, rest breaks, and rest periods in accordance with Heavy Vehicle National Law fatigue management rules. Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
The fatigue laws are strict and hard to escape. Your work and rest hours are set by law, including regular rest breaks, which means tight schedules can't be rushed no matter how much pressure you're under. Long hours away from home are common, especially on interstate runs. Pay varies wildly by employer and job type, but many driver roles cap out earnings-wise after a few years. Automation in logistics may reduce the number of driving jobs over time.
Where the jobs are
Regional areas with agricultural output and mining regions also employ many drivers. Long-distance work often means based in metro hubs but travelling between states regularly. Remote work is not applicable to this role.
