Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You'll need to get licensed, which means passing exams on Australian Consumer Law and auction rules that vary by state: that's time and money upfront. The real grind is that your income depends entirely on commission from auction sales. When the market slows, you earn nothing. Property auctions are seasonal and livestock markets can be unpredictable.
Where the jobs are
Property auctioneers concentrate in major cities where residential and commercial property turnover is highest. Art and fine goods auctions cluster in capital city galleries. Remote work is not an option in this role.
