Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You'll need to work rotating shifts including nights and weekends, which is non-negotiable in chemical plants running 24/7. The work is highly repetitive: hours of monitoring screens with occasional intense pressure when something goes wrong. Most positions require a Certificate III or IV in chemical operations, which takes 1 to 2 years. Pay growth hits a ceiling quickly; experienced operators don't earn dramatically more than entry level.
Where the jobs are
Some positions exist in regional areas near refineries and manufacturing hubs. Remote work is not an option. Jobs are most common in large manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and petrochemical companies rather than small businesses.
