Day-to-day
Measure and quantify building elements from architectural and engineering drawings using digital takeoff software and manual scale rules. Research and compile current rates for labour, materials, plant hire, and subcontractors through supplier quotations and industry pricing databases. Calculate labour productivity and duration estimates based on crew size, task complexity, site conditions, and relevant Australian Standards (AS/NZS standards for construction). Apply mark-up and contingency allowances for risk, overheads, profit margin, and project-specific factors such as remote locations or difficult terrain. Prepare tender schedules of rates and lump-sum estimates formatted to suit client specifications and tender requirements. Itemise provisional sums and prime cost items for client variation and supply requirements. Coordinate with subcontractors and material suppliers to obtain firm quotations and validate cost assumptions. Conduct site inspections to assess ground conditions, access, and logistical constraints that affect construction method and cost.

What this role asks for
Diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2)
Can employers fill these jobs
Employers hiring for this occupation had trouble finding suitable applicants in regional Australia in 2025, but not in the major cities. Ratings are not the same everywhere. NT and ACT were rated not in shortage; NSW and WA were rated in shortage. This measures how hard employers found it to fill jobs. It is not a count of jobs, and it does not say whether the occupation is growing.
Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You're doing detailed maths and measurement work all day, often under tight deadlines when tenders are due. Small errors in your estimates can cost projects hundreds of thousands of dollars, which means stress and accountability. Pay typically caps out below senior management level unless you move into project management or start your own quantity surveying practice.
Where the jobs are
Some work for consulting firms in regional centres, but most regional construction uses estimators based in the nearest city. Remote work is possible for office-based estimating, but site inspections mean you'll travel.
Pay
Published for ANZSCO unit group 3121, the wider group this job sits in, not for this job on its own.
This is the median for full-time employees who are not managers and are paid at the adult rate, before tax and salary sacrifice. It is a guide to what the work pays, not a wage rate.
