Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll carry serious liability if things go wrong on site: safety incidents, budget blowouts, or defects can damage your career and reputation fast. The role is also relentless during crunch periods: long hours managing multiple crises at once (delayed materials, labour shortages, weather delays) with angry clients and tight deadlines. Many career changers underestimate the stress and hours required, especially in the first few years.

Where the jobs are

Regional areas have construction work but fewer project management roles: you'll mainly find those in resource towns and growing regional centres. Practically speaking, you need to be in or willing to relocate to a major city to access the bulk of opportunities. Remote work is rare: you're on site regularly.
