Content Creator (Social Media)

A social media content creator plans, films, edits and posts the video and images a business puts on its social accounts. The work is part production, part copywriting, part reading the numbers. The ABS has no code for it and this page is filed against Music Professionals nec, so the official data behind the page describes a different group of workers entirely.

What this job is

A social media content creator makes the posts. In a small business that is one person filming on a phone, editing, writing the caption and scheduling it. In a larger team the work splits between a creator, an editor and a social media manager. Either way it is a weekly cycle: plan against a content calendar, shoot, edit, publish, read what happened, adjust. The job is more operational than it looks from the outside. You are running a shot list, brand rules, approvals, music licensing, comment moderation, and a posting schedule that does not stop for a public holiday. One thing to know before you rely on the data on this page. The ABS has no occupation code for social media content creation. This page is filed against Music Professionals nec, a residual category for music work, so the employment, pay and outlook data behind it describes musicians. We have written this page about the job, not about that category.

Day-to-day

Plan the week against the content calendar and the campaigns marketing has locked in. Write short scripts or hooks, and build a shot list for a filming day. Film on a phone or a small camera, usually in one or two blocks a week. Edit vertical video, add captions, and cut alternate versions for each platform. Write the post copy, check it against brand and legal rules, and get approval where the business needs it. Schedule posts and stories, and publish the ones that have to go out live. Reply to comments and direct messages, and pass complaints to the right person. Pull the weekly numbers on reach, saves, watch time and clicks, and say plainly what worked and what did not. Keep the asset library, the music licences and the usage permissions in order.

Can employers fill these jobs

Employers hiring for this occupation were generally able to find suitable applicants in 2025. This measures how hard employers found it to fill jobs. It is not a count of jobs, and it does not say whether the occupation is growing.

Requirements

There is no licence and no required qualification. A portfolio decides most hiring: three to five pieces you made, the numbers they earned, and a sentence on why you made them that way. A Certificate IV or Diploma in marketing or digital media may help you get an interview and could be subsidised, but employers in this field weigh the portfolio more heavily. The ABS files this category at skill level 1, a bachelor degree, and that reflects music professionals rather than this job, so do not read it as an entry requirement for content work. Check course options and costs at dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe and yourcareer.gov.au, and be careful with paid short courses that imply work at the end of them.

The honest hard part

The work is public and the feedback is immediate. A post that does nothing is visible to your whole team, and a post that upsets people is visible to everyone else. Hours drift, because a platform moment does not wait until Monday. A lot of these roles are casual, contract or part time. Generative tools already draft captions and cut rough edits, and that could reduce the volume of junior production work, although the judgement about what a business should say still sits with a person. If you want stability, look at the social media manager and marketing coordinator paths from here rather than staying in pure production.

Where the jobs are

Small businesses everywhere hire for it, often part time or on a contract. This is one of the few roles on this site that can genuinely be done from home, at least the editing and scheduling, although filming usually needs you in the room.
