Registration or licensing may be required.

Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You'll need expensive manufacturer-specific diagnostic training for each EV brand, and that training changes constantly as new models arrive. Battery pack replacements are rare right now, so much of your work will be routine maintenance on petrol cars for years. The high-voltage certification burden is real and ongoing, and EV repair skills don't pay much more than traditional mechanic work yet, despite the extra complexity.
Where the jobs are
Regional areas have almost no dedicated EV repair work currently. Most positions are tied to specific dealerships rather than independent shops, limiting your options outside cities.
Pay
