Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
Getting the right qualification takes 2 to 3 years full-time study or apprenticeship, and you'll need to pass competency assessments in AS/NZS 3000. The work is detail-heavy and mistakes mean serious safety risks or expensive rework.
Where the jobs are
Technicians are needed where there's heavy industry, power infrastructure, or large-scale construction. Remote work is not common in this role.
