Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll be weather-dependent and dealing with seasonal demand swings that hit your income hard. Droughts cut water access, wet seasons cause disease outbreaks, and winter slowdowns mean quiet months. The capital investment in land, irrigation, and harvesting equipment is massive upfront. You're also competing against established growers with better economies of scale.

Where the jobs are

Regional centres have smaller operations. Very little remote work: you need to be on-site managing soil, water, and harvest schedules.
