Day-to-day
Interpret fire protection system design drawings and AS 2118 specifications to plan pipe layouts, valve locations, and sprinkler head positions. Install steel and copper piping, fittings, and hangers using threading machines, crimping tools, and welding equipment to construct sprinkler distribution networks. Mount and position sprinkler heads, nozzles, and deflectors at code-compliant heights and spacing intervals on ceilings and walls. Connect pressure gauges, flow switches, alarm bells, and water supply test valves to main and branch lines for system monitoring. Pressure test completed systems using hydrostatic testing equipment to verify integrity and identify leaks before handover. Commission new systems by flushing lines, setting pressure relief valves, and conducting functional tests of sprinkler activation and water flow. Conduct annual and five-yearly inspections and maintenance of existing systems as mandated by AS 1851 and building compliance requirements. Repair or replace corroded pipes, faulty sprinkler heads, clogged strainers, and defective check valves in operational systems.

Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. The honest hard part
You'll need specialist fire safety qualifications on top of your plumbing ticket, and there's a real ceiling on work variety. Most days are routine maintenance checks and inspections rather than complex new installations. The work is physically demanding with lots of overhead work and confined spaces, and you're on call for system failures in buildings where people rely on your work not to fail.
Where the jobs are
In practice, work concentrates in major cities where there are more commercial and high-rise buildings requiring systems. Regional centres have work but it's thinner. Most jobs are based in one location since you're servicing buildings in your area, though some travel between sites is normal. Remote work doesn't apply to this trade.
