Day-to-day
Interpret mechanical engineering drawings and specifications to plan pipe routing, sizing, and system layouts for heating, cooling, and process applications. Calculate pipe sizes and pressure drops using design software and hydraulic calculation methods to ensure adequate flow and pressure requirements. Install copper, steel, polyethylene, and PVC pipework using soldering, welding, compression fittings, and push-fit jointing techniques. Commission and test piping systems using pressure testing equipment, flow meters, and thermometers to verify performance against design parameters. Diagnose faults in operating systems using pressure gauges, thermometers, and visual inspection to identify leaks, blockages, or performance degradation. Repair and replace worn components such as pumps, valves, expansion vessels, and heat exchangers in mechanical systems. Comply with the National Construction Code, AS/NZS 3500 plumbing standards, and local water authority requirements for backflow prevention and water conservation. Coordinate pipe installation with other trades (electricians, HVAC technicians, builders) to resolve spatial conflicts and ensure safe integration within building services.

Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You'll need to master hydraulic calculations, pressure testing, and reading complex engineering drawings: skills that take years of hands-on experience to develop properly. The work is physically demanding with lots of heavy lifting, working in confined spaces, and exposure to high-temperature systems. Pay doesn't match the complexity or risk compared to other trades.
Where the jobs are
Most work is in CBD office towers, hospitals, data centres, and manufacturing plants. Regional areas have fewer opportunities. Work is site-based, not remote. Job density follows major construction activity.
Pay
Published for ANZSCO unit group 3341, the wider group this job sits in, not for this job on its own.
This is the median for full-time employees who are not managers and are paid at the adult rate, before tax and salary sacrifice. It is a guide to what the work pays, not a wage rate.
