Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You're betting on your eye for value and trend prediction, which means slow cash flow and dead stock are real risks. Most dealers start as sole traders with their own capital locked into inventory that may sit for months. You're also competing against online marketplaces and algorithms that price-match instantly, and authentication knowledge takes years to build properly.
Where the jobs are
In reality, most retail shops cluster in established precincts: Paddington and Glebe, Fitzroy and South Yarra, West End, Northbridge. Many now work hybrid (markets, estate sales, online) rather than fixed retail, so location flexibility is increasing.
Pay

This is the median for full-time employees who are not managers and are paid at the adult rate, before tax and salary sacrifice. It is a guide to what the work pays, not a wage rate.
