Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll work evenings, weekends, and public holidays as standard, not occasionally. Events don't run 9-to-5. Stress about food safety compliance and last-minute client changes is constant.

Where the jobs are

In reality, most jobs are in major cities where there's demand for corporate events, hotels, and institutional catering. Regional work exists but is patchier. Some corporate catering companies offer flexibility, but event-based work ties you to where your clients are.
