Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Venues are closing or consolidating across Australia, especially regional theatres and independent cinemas. You'll manage tight margins, unpredictable attendance (weather, streaming competition, school holidays), and deal with understaffed teams doing multiple jobs. Evening and weekend shifts are non-negotiable. Pay is modest for the responsibility and compliance burden you carry.

Where the jobs are

Jobs concentrate in major cities where multiplex chains and larger theatres operate. Regional towns still have some venues but fewer openings. Live theatre jobs cluster in arts districts and capital cities with performing arts centres. Remote work doesn't apply. Check local council arts budgets and cinema chain head offices for opportunities, as venue-level roles rarely advertise widely online.
