Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The role is heavily dependent on membership numbers and venue foot traffic, which means your income and job security swing with economic downturns and gym competition. Shift work is common.

Where the jobs are

Practically speaking, most jobs are in metro areas where there's higher population density and more leisure facilities. Regional areas have fewer opportunities. Public council-run centres are concentrated in outer suburbs and regional towns. Private gym chains cluster in affluent postcodes. Remote work is not possible.
