Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You're on-call constantly. Guest crises happen at 2am, staff call in sick during peak season, and you're expected to solve problems that aren't in your control: like a pipe burst flooding rooms or a food poisoning incident. Seasonal tourism means feast-or-famine months and staff turnover is brutal.

Where the jobs are

Regional jobs exist but are fewer and often lower-paid. Hospitality employment data shows management roles cluster where hotel supply is densest: major cities and established tourist destinations, not remote areas.

Pay

A$1,827 a week
