Day-to-day

Inspect and assess existing flooring surfaces for damage, unevenness, and suitability for finishing treatment. Operate industrial floor sanders, edge sanders, and polishing machines to remove old coatings, adhesives, and surface irregularities. Prepare floor surfaces by sweeping, vacuuming, and damp-mopping to remove dust and contaminants before treatment. Mix and apply timber stains, sealers, polyurethane coatings, and resin-based finishes using brushes, rollers, and spraying equipment. Lay protective coverings and establish work zones to prevent contamination and ensure safety compliance under Work Health and Safety Act 2011. Test moisture content in timber and concrete substrates using moisture meters to prevent coating adhesion failure. Perform spot repairs using timber filler, epoxy compounds, or patching materials on damaged floor sections. Sand timber floors using multi-directional techniques to achieve smooth, even surfaces ready for finishing.

The honest hard part

Your lungs take a beating. You'll breathe dust and chemical fumes daily even with masks and ventilation. Respiratory issues are common long-term. The work is physically demanding on your back and knees from bending, kneeling, and standing on hard surfaces for 8+ hours. Weather delays kill work schedules in regional areas.

Where the jobs are

Reality: major metros have steady residential and commercial work, regional areas depend on building cycles and can be lean. Most work is site-based. Remote work doesn't exist in this role.
