Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You're betting your income on commodity prices (milk and meat) you can't control, weather you can't predict, and animal health crises that hit without warning. Most goat farms run on thin margins. You'll work 7 days a week during peak seasons with no days off, and a disease outbreak or market crash can wipe out a year's profit in weeks.
Where the jobs are
In reality, most commercial operations are near established dairy processors or meat export facilities, and proximity to markets and infrastructure matters more than finding a 'job': you're typically starting or buying into an existing enterprise rather than being employed by someone else.
