Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
Dairy farming has a low profit margin, so you'll work long hours (milking twice daily, 365 days a year) for modest returns. Milk prices are set by processors, not you. Debt from land and equipment is heavy, weather and animal disease can wipe out income, and switching careers means you're competing against family farms with generational knowledge and established land.
Where the jobs are
Practically speaking, farms cluster where rainfall and pasture are reliable. There's no remote work. Most farms are family-owned, so entry as a career changer usually means buying land, leasing, or working as a manager on someone else's operation first.
