Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll spend a lot of time fighting with insurance companies and employers over what they'll fund and accept. The emotional weight is real too: you're managing people's trauma, grief about lost capacity, and sometimes their anger at you when recovery doesn't go the way they hoped. Pay is modest and won't match what you might earn in other counselling fields.

Where the jobs are

Jobs concentrate in major cities where there are more rehabilitation facilities, private insurers, and NDIS providers. Regional areas have fewer positions and often require travel between clients. Most work is office and site-based, not remote. Workers compensation schemes and large employers in each state are the main employers.

Pay
