Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
The work is physically demanding with repetitive strain on your hands, wrists, and back from potting, transplanting, and lifting throughout the day. Pay is low and capped unless you move into supervision or horticulture management. You'll spend a lot of time outdoors in hot sun or cold weather, and there's not much pathway to significantly higher earnings.
Where the jobs are
Work concentrates where there's high residential demand and good transport for stock. Regional towns have some nurseries, but volumes are lower. Most jobs are on-site only; remote work isn't an option.
