Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Pay stays modest even with experience: you're mostly moving stock and processing transactions rather than closing big deals, so commissions and bonuses are limited. You'll hit a ceiling quickly unless you step into management. The role also has medium automation risk as online shopping grows and self-checkout becomes standard.

Where the jobs are

Jobs concentrate in major metro areas where there are more retail tech stores and corporate head offices. Regional areas have fewer dedicated positions. Retail ICT sales is overwhelmingly urban and shopping-centre based, not remote.
