Day-to-day
Dispense fuel into vehicles using pump equipment and guide customers through the fuelling process. Operate electronic point-of-sale (EFTPOS) systems to process cash, card, and fuel card transactions. Stock shelves with convenience items such as confectionery, beverages, automotive products, and newspapers, ensuring correct pricing and product rotation. Monitor fuel tank levels and liaise with management to arrange fuel deliveries from suppliers. Clean and maintain service station forecourt, pumps, and retail areas to meet health and safety standards. Check fuel pumps and equipment for mechanical faults and report malfunctions to management. Verify vehicle fuel tank caps and fuel door conditions before dispensing to prevent spillage. Process fuel card reconciliation by scanning cards, verifying pin numbers, and recording transactions in point-of-sale system.

What this role asks for
Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5)
Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
The pay ceiling is low and unlikely to improve much even with experience. You'll work irregular shifts including early mornings, late nights, and weekends for years without much prospect of moving up unless you become a manager. Self-service pumps and contactless payments have already changed the work, and fewer attendants may be needed at some sites.
Where the jobs are
Service stations exist across Australia in every metro area and regional town, but jobs concentrate around major highways, suburban shopping strips, and transport hubs. Practically speaking, there are more opportunities in and around capital cities and along major freight routes. Remote work isn't an option for this role.
Pay
