Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Pay is low and capped. Most positions are part-time or contract-based with irregular hours, making it hard to build stable income. You'll carry emotional weight supporting students facing systemic disadvantage and trauma, with limited resources. Career progression without teaching qualifications is slow.

Where the jobs are

Some positions in outer suburbs of major cities. Employment is tied directly to where Indigenous communities are located, not metro job markets.
