Day-to-day

Design irrigation layouts and systems using CAD software or hand sketches, calculating water pressure, flow rates, and pipe sizing for specific soil types and crops. Install mainline pipes, submains, laterals, and sprinkler or drip components using trenching equipment, joining techniques, and pressure testing procedures. Commission and test irrigation systems by running water through circuits, measuring flow and pressure at multiple points, and adjusting nozzles and emitter spacing. Diagnose faults in irrigation systems by inspecting for leaks, blockages, pressure drops, and electrical failures in pump units and control boxes. Repair or replace damaged pipes, sprinkler heads, solenoid valves, and pump seals using hand tools, welding equipment, or crimping machines as required. Install and program irrigation controllers and soil moisture sensors to automate watering schedules and respond to rainfall or plant demand. Perform preventative maintenance including flushing lines, cleaning filters, winterising systems, and inspecting for root intrusion or sediment accumulation. Advise clients on water-efficient practices, compliance with state water restrictions, and system upgrades to reduce consumption or improve coverage.

Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Water restrictions and drought cycles mean your work dries up when rain falls or bans hit. You'll need to master hydraulics, electrics, and mechanical systems to diagnose faults, which means ongoing training. Physical work in heat and mud is constant. Pay caps out lower than trades like plumbing unless you become a contractor.

Where the jobs are

Landscape irrigation work is stronger in metro suburbs but seasonal. Regional and remote farm work is steadier but isolated. Remote work is not an option.
