Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Most library assistant roles max out around mid-range wages with limited progression without moving into qualified librarianship (which needs a degree). The work is also repetitive: shelving, data entry, and system updates can feel monotonous. Digital self-checkouts are replacing some circulation tasks, so fewer entry points are opening up.

Where the jobs are

Public libraries concentrate in metro areas and regional city centres where councils fund library services. Regional towns have fewer roles. Remote work is uncommon: you're on-site managing physical materials and patrons. Work through local council job boards and library networks rather than mainstream job sites.
