Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Getting your AME licence takes 3 to 4 years of structured training and on-the-job hours, which is a serious commitment before you earn decent money. The real grind is the certification burden. Work is shift-based including nights and weekends, and you're on your feet in hangars doing physically demanding work. Job security depends entirely on the aviation industry, which collapses during downturns.

Where the jobs are

Regional Australia has very limited opportunities. Practical reality is that you'll need to relocate to a capital city to find consistent work. Remote work is not possible for hands-on maintenance.
