Can employers fill these jobs
Employers hiring for this occupation had trouble finding suitable applicants in regional Australia in 2025, but not in the major cities. Ratings are not the same everywhere. ACT was rated in shortage. This measures how hard employers found it to fill jobs. It is not a count of jobs, and it does not say whether the occupation is growing.

Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You'll need a Certificate III or IV in electronics, which takes time and money upfront. The real catch is that a lot of circuit board work is being automated or outsourced overseas, so job security can be patchy. Pay tops out lower than electricians, and fine soldering work strains your eyes and hands over decades.
Where the jobs are
The reality is manufacturing is thinning in regional Australia. You'll find work with defence contractors, heavy industry, and machinery maintenance companies mostly in metro areas. Remote work is rare in this trade.
Pay
