Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The work is physically repetitive and the pay ceiling is low. You'll spend years doing the same maintenance cycles on similar machines, with limited advancement into management or specialisation. As offices go digital and print less, automation is shrinking the market. You need a Certificate III or IV but won't earn what electricians or plumbers make.

Where the jobs are

In regional areas, work is sparse and you may travel long distances between sites. Remote work isn't an option since you install and repair physical machines on-site.

Pay

A$1,882 a week
