A Local Government Legislator is an elected member of a local council who develops, debates, and votes on by-laws, policies, and strategic plans that govern a municipality or shire. They represent their ward or division, attend council meetings and standing committees, and work with council staff to address community concerns ranging from planning and infrastructure to waste management and community services. Their decisions are subject to the Local Government Act 2020 (Victoria), Local Government Act 1993 (NSW), or equivalent legislation in other Australian states and territories.

Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You need to win an election first. There's no 'entry level' councillor job you can apply for. You're unlikely to replace full-time work income. Also, constituents will blame you personally for pothole complaints and rate rises, regardless of whether council actually controls those issues.

Where the jobs are

Every Australian council area has elected positions, so the role exists everywhere from metro to remote regions. However, competitive councils with higher allowances concentrate in larger cities. Regional and rural councils often struggle to fill vacancies and offer lower allowances. Remote work isn't applicable.
