Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll be doing physically demanding manual labour in harsh conditions: underground heat, dust, noise, and isolation from family for weeks at a time on fly-in fly-out rosters. The injury risk is real despite safety rules, and there's a pay ceiling: you won't progress to better money without getting licensed qualifications (like operator tickets), which takes years of study on top of shift work. Automated equipment may replace some manual tasks over time.

Where the jobs are

Remote work doesn't exist in this role. Most jobs are in regional and remote areas, not cities. Employment depends heavily on commodity prices and mine expansion cycles.
