Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

It's physically demanding work in harsh conditions: you'll be handling heavy drill rods in remote sites, mud, dust, and heat for 10 to 12 hour shifts. Your pay ceiling is modest because you're support staff, not the lead operator. If the mine or exploration project winds down, you're out of work fast.

Where the jobs are

You'll need to relocate or fly-in-fly-out to remote sites. Almost no remote work. Check mining and exploration company websites directly.
