Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll spend most days sitting in a car with nervous or hostile people, repeating the same test route dozens of times. The work is repetitive and emotionally draining, and you're constantly delivering bad news to people who've failed. Pay is modest for a government job, and there's limited room to move up without leaving the role entirely.

Where the jobs are

All jobs are with state and territory transport authorities. Work is based in capital cities and major regional centres where testing demand is highest. Remote work isn't possible.

Pay
