Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Your income ceiling is real. Without moving into management or specialising heavily (like becoming a diesel mechanic or transmission specialist), you'll hit a wage plateau around mid-career. The work is also physically demanding on your back, shoulders, and knees. Repetitive strain injuries are common, especially fitting suspension and engine work. You need solid maths for torque specs and wiring diagrams, not just mechanical ability.

Where the jobs are

Regional centres have fewer opportunities unless near major highways or mining regions. Most work is workshop-based (dealerships, independent shops, tyre chains). Remote work doesn't apply. Automotive repair clusters follow population density and vehicle density patterns.
