Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
The work is physically demanding on your back, knees, and shoulders from bending, lifting, and repetitive machinery use. Automation is creeping in with semi-automatic tyre changers, which narrows the skill gap and job security over time.
Where the jobs are
In reality, jobs concentrate in metro areas where there's higher vehicle density and more workshop chains. Regional towns have work but fewer options. Most roles are on-site in workshops; mobile tyre services exist but are less common. Remote work doesn't apply to this trade.
