Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
More of this work is being outsourced, and some may be automated. Many organisations now use managed IT services or cloud providers instead of keeping in-house hardware teams. Component replacement is simpler than it used to be, so there's less skilled repair work. Pay typically caps out without moving into management or specialised certifications. You'll also spend a lot of time on mundane tasks like replacing toner and untangling cables.
Where the jobs are
In reality, most jobs concentrate in major metro areas where large organisations, universities, hospitals, and government offices maintain bigger IT teams. Regional areas have fewer dedicated positions. Banking, healthcare, education, and government sectors are your best bets. Remote work is uncommon for hardware roles since you need to be on-site to fix equipment.
