Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The pay is modest and capped. There's little room to move up without leaving the driver's seat. You're also bound by strict fatigue laws that limit your weekly hours, so overtime isn't always an option. Dealing with difficult passengers and managing their safety is emotionally draining, especially on long routes.

Where the jobs are

Jobs concentrate in major cities and regional hubs. Work is strongest where there's tourism, university campuses, or intercity travel demand. Remote work is not possible in this role.
