Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Most amateur and semi-pro athletes in niche sports don't earn enough to live on. You'll likely need a second job or rely on sponsorship to cover training costs, travel, and living expenses. Injuries can end your career with no income safety net, and there's no real job security once you're past your physical peak.

Where the jobs are

In reality, opportunities cluster around major metro areas where sports clubs, governing bodies, and training facilities are based. Some niche sports concentrate in specific regions. Remote athletes are rare unless you're already established and can access online coaching.
