WHS Coordinator
A WHS Coordinator helps organisations meet their work health and safety obligations. The role sits between frontline workers and senior management, turning safety policy into practical action.
What this job is
WHS Coordinators are responsible for keeping workplaces safe and legally compliant. Day to day, that means identifying hazards, maintaining safety records, running inductions, investigating incidents, and making sure the organisation follows relevant WHS legislation. The role is practical and procedural. It involves a lot of documentation, communication with workers at all levels, and follow-through on corrective actions. It is not a purely desk-based role. WHS Coordinators often walk the floor, inspect work areas, and talk directly with the people doing the work.

Day-to-day
A typical day could include conducting a site inspection in the morning, updating a hazard register, reviewing an incident report from the previous shift, and preparing materials for a toolbox talk. There may be meetings with managers about upcoming changes to work processes that carry new risks. Keeping training records current is a regular task, as is liaising with external regulators or insurers when required. The pace varies. Some days are routine and administrative. Others, following a near-miss or injury, require fast, careful action.

Requirements
A Certificate IV or Diploma in Work Health and Safety is the typical entry-level qualification for this role (JSA Occupation Profile). These qualifications are offered by TAFE providers and registered training organisations across Australia. Some employers may accept equivalent experience combined with shorter accredited units. For course options, yourcareer.gov.au lists registered providers by location and delivery mode. Free or subsidised training may be available depending on your state or territory through dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe.
The honest hard part
The hardest part of this role is often cultural, not technical. A WHS Coordinator can write excellent procedures and maintain spotless records, yet still struggle to change how people actually behave on the job. Getting buy-in from workers who see safety processes as paperwork, or from managers who treat compliance as a cost rather than a priority, takes persistence and interpersonal skill. There is also real accountability attached to the role. When something goes wrong, the WHS Coordinator is often the first person asked what was in place and why it did not work. People considering this career change should be comfortable with that responsibility and with having difficult conversations at all levels of an organisation.
Where the jobs are
The role exists across most industries and regions, including construction, manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and government, so opportunities are not confined to capital cities.
