Wool Handler

A wool handler works in a shearing shed, keeping sheep moving to the shearers, keeping the board clean and helping prepare the wool clip for sale.

What this job is

A wool handler, also called a shearing shed hand, works in a shearing shed during shearing. They keep sheep moving from the pens to the shearers, pick up each fleece as it comes off the sheep and spread it on the skirting table, and keep the shearing board clean. Wool handlers also help skirt and roll fleeces, press the wool into bales and brand the bales, so the clip is ready for the wool classer and for sale.

Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The work is physically hard, fast and repetitive, with long days of bending and lifting in a hot, dusty shed. Shearing is seasonal, so there may be weeks without work between runs. You may need to travel between properties and stay in shearers' quarters away from home.

Where the jobs are

Most work comes through shearing contractors and moves from property to property. The work is on-site, so remote work isn't possible.
