Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll need deep experience in your industry first: boards rarely hire external career changers into this role. The path typically takes 15 to 20 years of senior management roles, not a quick pivot. You're also constantly accountable for things beyond your control: market crashes, staff departures, regulatory changes. The stress is real, the hours are long, and one bad quarterly result can end your contract.

Where the jobs are

Some regional opportunities exist in mining, agriculture, and manufacturing hubs. Large charities and government agencies also hire for equivalent roles. Remote work is unusual: you need to be visible to the Board and staff.
