Day-to-day

Assess individual dog temperament, drive level, and suitability for specific work roles before commencing training. Design and deliver behaviour conditioning programmes tailored to the dog's role, using positive reinforcement and operant conditioning techniques. Train dogs to respond reliably to commands for detection work, search and rescue, herding, security patrol, or disability support tasks. Evaluate handler-dog team performance and provide corrective feedback to improve working relationship and obedience. Maintain detailed records of each dog's training progress, behavioural issues, and mastery of commands. Conduct socialisation exercises to build dog confidence and reduce fear or aggression towards people, animals, and novel environments. Identify and address behavioural problems such as aggression, anxiety, reactivity, or recall failure using systematic desensitisation or counterconditioning. Work with handlers to teach them correct techniques for cueing, reinforcement timing, and maintaining the trained behaviour between formal sessions.

Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll face serious physical risk from bites and injuries, especially when working with aggressive or traumatised dogs. Pay is modest and hard to predict because most work is contract or casual. Training a dog to reliable working standard takes months of repetitive, physically demanding work. If a dog fails training or a handler doesn't follow your instructions, you wear that failure. Burnout is real.

Where the jobs are

Disability support dog training is scattered across metro areas. Remote work is not an option. Private sector demand centres on metro security and government agencies.

Pay

A$1,276 a week
