Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll be handling strong chemical smells and skin irritants daily, and you won't move up to stylist or therapist without getting your own qualifications, which means going back to study while working. The pay sits well below stylist rates, and salon work can mean weekend and evening shifts with little flexibility.

Where the jobs are

Hair and beauty salons operate in every Australian suburb and town, so jobs are widespread rather than concentrated in one region. Regional towns have salons but often fewer opportunities for progression. Most work is in-person only.
