Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The role is heavily compliance-driven, so you're constantly tracking shifting regulations (AHPRA, NDIS, state health laws) and your mistakes can expose the practice to fines or loss of accreditation. Staff turnover in admin roles is high, so you're regularly recruiting and training. Remote work is rare because you need to be onsite managing rosters, billing disputes, and regulatory audits.

Where the jobs are

Most practices are in metro areas where patient numbers and multi-clinician practices justify dedicated managers. Regional practices often ask clinicians to handle admin, so fewer standalone roles exist outside cities. Jobs concentrate wherever there are larger medical, dental, and allied health clusters. Work-from-office is the norm; remote roles are uncommon.
