Sales Assistant (General)

A Sales Assistant (General) serves customers in retail and related settings, helping them find products and completing transactions. It is one of the most common entry-level roles in Australia, with a large workforce spread across many industries. For career changers, it can offer a practical way to move into customer-facing work without a lengthy qualification period.

What this job is

Sales assistants help customers in shops and retail environments. The core work involves greeting customers, answering questions about products, processing sales at the register, and keeping the shop floor tidy and stocked. Some roles include handling returns, managing stock, or working toward sales targets. The work is hands-on and people-facing, with most shifts spent on your feet and in direct contact with the public.

Day-to-day

A typical shift might start with opening the store, checking stock levels, and setting up displays. Through the day, a sales assistant answers customer questions, locates products, and processes payments. Quieter periods often involve restocking shelves, tidying the floor, or processing deliveries. Towards the end of a shift, there may be cash reconciliation or handover notes for the next team. Rosters often include weekends, public holidays, and evening shifts, particularly in larger retail centres.

Who does this now

Is it steady

Self-checkout and online shopping are reducing headcount in many retailers. Advisory and complex-product roles look more durable.

Requirements

The typical entry point is completion of Year 12 (source: JSA Occupation Profile). No formal tertiary qualification is generally required to start. Some employers offer on-the-job training, and short retail or customer service courses may help a career changer build confidence quickly. Certificate II or III in Retail Services is one option worth exploring. You can search available courses at yourcareer.gov.au or check whether subsidised training applies in your state at dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe.

The honest hard part

The honest challenge with this role is that pay sits at the lower end of the Australian wage scale, and many positions are part-time or casual, which can make financial planning difficult for someone who has left a salaried role. Shift work, including weekends and public holidays, is common and may not suit everyone's circumstances. The work can also be physically tiring and emotionally demanding when dealing with difficult customers. For career changers coming from office-based or professional roles, the adjustment to a retail environment, including the pace, the physical demands, and the pay cut, is worth thinking through carefully before committing.

Where the jobs are

In practice, retail roles exist in every state and territory, from large shopping centres in capital cities to smaller independent stores in regional towns. The concentration of roles tends to follow population density.
