Transport Revenue Officer
A transport revenue officer, also called an authorised transport officer, checks that passengers on trains, trams and buses have valid tickets, issues fines, and keeps an eye on safety across the public transport network.
What this job is
A transport revenue officer works on public transport, checking that passengers have a valid ticket or travel card and any concession they claim. Where a passenger has no valid ticket, or behaves in an unsafe or disruptive way, the officer may issue a fine. Transport revenue officers also help passengers with ticket, route and timetable questions, watch for safety and security problems, and work with police on fare evasion and passenger safety. Officers usually work under powers given by state or territory transport law, and the work is done out on the network rather than in an office.

Day-to-day
Check tickets, travel cards and concession entitlements on trains, trams, buses and at stations. Issue fines to passengers without a valid ticket, following set procedures. Answer passenger questions about tickets, routes and timetables. Help passengers during special events and service disruptions. Watch for safety risks, security threats and suspicious behaviour on the network. Deal with disruptive or unsafe behaviour, and issue fines where the law allows. Work with police on fare evasion and passenger safety. Keep accurate records of inspections, incidents and fines issued.

What this role asks for
Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5)
Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You will often deal with people who are angry or upset about being fined, and some situations can turn aggressive. The job is mostly on your feet, moving between vehicles and stations in all weather. Shifts can include early mornings, late nights, weekends and public holidays. You need to apply the rules fairly every time, even when a passenger's story is hard to hear.
Where the jobs are
Jobs are with the agencies and operators that run public transport, so most are in capital cities with large train, tram and bus networks. Some regional centres with public transport may also have officers. The work is out on the network, so it can't be done remotely.
